Philippines - A Note
The Philippines, officially the Republic of
the Philippines, is an archipelagic nation located in
Southeast Asia. The Philippine archipelago comprises 7,107
islands in the western Pacific Ocean, bordering countries
such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Palau and the Republic of
China. However, the bulk of its fast-growing population
lives on just 11 of the islands.
The Philippines has a presidential, unitary form of
government, where the President functions as both head of
state and head of government, and is commander-in-chief of
the armed forces. The president is elected by popular vote
to a single six-year term, during which time she or he
appoints and presides over the cabinet. The church's
influence is strong in Asia's largest Catholic nation.
The Philippines is a newly industrialized country with an
economy anchored on agriculture but with substantial
contributions from manufacturing, mining, remittances from
overseas Filipinos and service industries such as tourism
and, increasingly, business process outsourcing. The country
is known for having one of most vibrant BPO industries in
Asia. Its national economy is the 47th largest in the world
with a GDP of over US$117 billion in 2006. The economy
experienced 7.3% growth in 2007, in line with the "7, 8, 9"
project of the government to accelerate GDP growth by 2009.
The currency unit is called the Philippine Peso.
