India’s constitution, which came in force in 1950, is the
longest and most thorough constitution of any independent
nation in the world. It is the world’s largest democracy
with three branches of governance, the Legislature,
Executive and Judiciary.

India is a prominent and influential member of ASEAN, SAARC
and the WTO and has a huge impact on the politics and
economy of South East Asia. The financial sector reforms in
1991 reduced government control on foreign trade and
investment and increased private participation in industry
and finance, triggering unprecedented growth in all sectors
of the economy. Recently, India has capitalised on its large
pool of educated, English-speaking people and trained
professionals to become an important outsourcing destination
for multinational corporations and a popular destination for
medical tourism. India has also become a major exporter of
software as well as financial, research, and technological
services. Infrastructure is one of the hottest sectors for
investment, with the government spending billions on roads,
